Thank you for your suggestios, I think I have what I want with the arms, but im now considering the option you gave me about the scythe on the back, i will see how the draw goes with the legs and the define a pose.
This is the new pose:

Kiya: Awesome start! I love the vibrant color combo you chose, and the head looks super cool so far!
Tzu: Looking forward to see more of your costume! Always a treat to follow your costume making progress
As for myself, here's a linky to my progress gallery: http://artzone.daz3d.com/index.php?/.../va/&aid=53843

Lastly, on the ghostly image of Dhuums hallow eyes it should say.
"A good person." on the left eye. "Is a dead one" on the right.

Very interesting suggestions but unfortunately adding such details would be quite physically impossible for me. The actual piece will be by hand on 11" x 14" vellum (largest material that can fit in a scanner). (and it appears that I have an old drawing still in there, unfinished...)
As I noted prior, this isn't a typical "licking the blade" but rather cutting his tongue on the blade (as opposed to say, cutting one's wrist/palm). Though you're right that the general idea is overdone - part of the reasons why I wanted to think of something else, but my mind just keeps drawing blanks for something that can be "scary."
Wish I had a tablet. :/

@Konig, seeing you mention you find hardly anything scary, perhaps you shouldnt try to come up with something that you find scary .. but think of what you think other people find scary ... in this regard i found reading Killeen and 'Minions' rather amusing, esp with being used to playing Necro ... hope this subtle tune sparks some other ideas
Some more hands on advice, composition also has allot to do with scare + leaving parts out to be filled in by emagination ... this is more in the execution of the drawing, instead of the topic ... as with the right angle and some suggestion, you can make a My Little Pony look scary

I always like when artists/writers leave the scary part to the imagination of the viewers/readers.
Because one's mind fills in the "blanks" with whatever is scariest to the individual.
For instance, in a movie, I much rather not see the monster at the end of the movie in full view, because a gigantic spider with blood dripping fangs is not scary to me. Rather imagine for myself what I find scary. Same goes for written stories and pictures.

@Konig: Are you planning on just doing a portrait or are you also going to include the body? Maybe try approaching it from a different angle. I think doing a piece where there's a slight side profile view of the face would be slightly more interesting.
@Minami: You've been gone for far too long.

@Konig: I would say that the eyes are the most important part on that drawing if u make it as a face portrait... becouse it can play with the viweres mind and give a scary or creepy "subliminal message", anyway the expresion of the eyes is really hard but im sure you can get a good one.

@Arghore & Minami: I generally do try to go for the "hidden fear" - but given that I haven't drawn in a while, not sure if I should do that as, imo, in a visual still piece, it takes more work to instill fear on what isn't shown than to merely draw something scary. Unless you go the cheesy "hidden in the shadows/mist/fog" idea.
@Charlie & Usk: I was going to do a portrait, with a background of some kind (the pieces I'm practicing on, which includes what I put up before, are smaller than what I'll be using on the actual work by 2"x2" so I'd have more room), and I was going to have the guy smaller so I can show more. But looking through the thread, I'm rather surprisingly disappointed in the amount of Dhuum/Grenth/Thorn ideas going around - whether its suggestions or simply related to the three. Well, not that surprising, but still disappointed. So I'm dropping the idea I had and am going for something else.
Got an idea involving my elementalist going in my head. He's less of a sadistic scare tactic and more of a "pure destructive" scare tactic kind of personality. So we'll see where this leads me.
Edit: Wow... I'm making another sketch and decided to make it more detailed... my word, I am terrible at hands now it seems...

@ Usk: I think one way to depict a pose like the one you wished for would be a "charged" pose. Try this physically on yourself: Take the pose of the character you're drawing, maybe with a broomstick or such to simulate the scythe in your hands, then tense all your muscles at once and think what this does to your pose. Then draw the character the way it would look like if it used all its muscles at once. I've tried this a couple of times and it gives the pose a more realistic feel IMHO.
Looking neat so far, everyone

Wow everyone is on it already D: I better get started too. Like I already said, I never stick to my ideas, thought of another one I'd really like, might aswell do them both, as they both very much interest them. I'll get scetching on them today.
And for the others already started, I can only say gogogo!
@ Minami. You're back Some feelings I had with your picc.. I think you either need to change the costume (the boots are a bit too modern too me) or make the face have a really grim expression. That however is just a feeling I got to your work, I don't know where your going so I might be totaly wrong
@Usk Delt. I think those scetches look good, just the pose might be a bit too simple/passive. When I was thinking how to flare it up a bit, I was thinking maybe the dervish could be slashing some pumpkins (you can interpreted whats with the pumkins, maybe they are attacking him) you get a fresh slashing animation, pieces of pumpkin flying everywher. Just a thought..
EDIT: Ok did something myself, figured i needed to get started. First scetch to give me a bit of an idea of the setting. And yes.. I changed my mind xD No more king Thorn (yet..). She will be eating/licking a candycane apple btw.
I made an album for the contest hear, in case someone wants to see all pictures more easily (still one pic now )
http://s741.photobucket.com/albums/x...Contest%20GWG/
Anyone has an idea what to let her wear? Atm thinking of either a small variant of Elite Kurzick memser armor, or some Ritualist for some tattoo's, which is more guildwarsish imo. Suggestions? :3

Tommy, thanks for your advice.
Your pumpkin looks so cute! ^_^ I love how it has that plopped down and settled look. Looking forward to see more!
My pic so far only counts as a "study" in digital drawing would. The boots are the same mukluks as you can see on one of the GW2 Necro videos.
Expressions are not made yet.
The texturing will change the feel of the clothes, right now they're all stripped.
My character is wearing the same "gothic lolita" style clothes as the necro girl in the GW2 video. Only thing I changed is the hair, since I didn't like the mini-mohawk in the video. :S

Updated OP with links and new participants. I'm really thankful for all the people who have set up progress galleries already, it makes it easier for newcomers to this thread to catch up, and for the judges to browse the entries at the end of the workshop. You can add a progress gallery anytime before the workshop closes, but of course it helps to set one up early for the sake of getting attention and feedback.
@ Minami: I agree that the shoes could probably be altered a bit. I took a couple screenies of the necro in the Grasping Dead video:
here it looks like she's got mid-calf heels (I cant remember what theyre called XD) and that probably goes better with the gothic mesmer look.
I must admit though, I didn't know where you got the idea of the "pompoms" on the boots, but now I see them too:
Damn you have good eyes, I would never have noticed if I didnt screencap it by chance. Also, pin-striped leggings for awesomeness! I don't know if you've thought about it, or even if you're making that armour or something entirely new, but maybe you could add leggings like that. You're the artist though, you must make the choice as you see fit.
@ Tommy's: Contrary to Minami, I thought it was creepy (and sexy ) at first. I can kind of see how it would be cute too though I dont think that's a bad thing, just play around with it and see where it gets you. I think playful scary is a really cool concept.
EDIT: Russiansteven joined the panel of judges!

I just updated my progress. I tried to fix the stance/thighs as best I could without having to re-draw it entirely. The arm is fixed. I started filling in details and darkened the lines. Have a look and tell me what you think.

Looks good :3 Just some points you could improve on:
-His left hand. I think his wrists should be bigger and the fingers should be longer. Creepy creatures often have long boney fingers, so I think making them longer would increase the creepiness.
-His right legg: I think his knee is too much to the side, perhabs make the angle of it a little bit different so it points a bit more inwards. Just a little bit though. And perhabs make its lower leg a bit more to the center of the image, might give him a bit more of a powerfull position.

Okay I am putting my to-do list aside for this because GWGuru Nolani Peeps helped me tremendously in my quest to learn digital art and it's a great honor for me to be able to participate in this wonderful community spirit. It'd be a shame if I missed it.
I am more than happy to share some insights as well if needed but there are so many skilled artists here already that I am most likely to be the one who needs the pointers. =P I might go through each entry tonight or this weekend and give some detailed insights/feedback if I can come up with some.
Not to mention I have this new concept. I am debating if I may want to wait for the rules first if it would be acceptable but I am taking my chances for now. I can always back out later and just continue with the drawing as a personal piece since I feel quite inspired by the idea atm.
Name: Ravenhawk
Art Form: Illustration
Idea: Pumpkin Carving is for Sissies (Okay there's a hint >_>)
Progress Gallery:
I'll post a rough sketch sometime this weekend. Still in the process of refining my last drawing which I'll probably finish tonight anyway.
I have dedicated a gallery folder in my DA Profile for this.

Artbook Award: [_] TEMPTED! But no for now. I'll let you know if I changed my mind.
